Are you seeking couples therapy for infidelity?
If you have questions and concerns about infidelity and sex addiction, there is probably a reason for it. It can be a good occasion to stop, take stock and reflect on the relationship. Read more below, on the blog and website. There is also a free relationship test here. Or book a single consultation, like a party check, and get an overview of the matter. But stop the accident and immediately click on infidelity or call 61661900 for couples therapy if the damage has been done. Remember that it is never too late to prevent or save the relationship and the family after infidelity.
Is sex addiction a diagnosis?
Sex addiction is not yet an official diagnosis, but it is believed, based on American studies, that there are currently around 5% of the Western population suffering from sex addiction – primarily men. And the trend is increasing. Especially in connection with cases of adultery.
It also shows evidence from my own practice, as a private practicing psychotherapist specializing in couple therapy. As a couples therapist, I experience, especially in client cases with repeated infidelity, that one or both parties begin to see a pattern and consider whether it might be a matter of some form of sex addiction. On the website you can read more about sex addiction, infidelity and various causes of infidelity.
However, the most important thing is not to find a villain, blame or cause – this can sometimes only make it worse – strengthen a negative spiral, lead to blame, abdicate responsibility (both parties), intensify the shame, worsen the imbalance, reinforce unconscious patterns and cement the hopelessness and the powerlessness… If the couple does not get professional help quickly, the couple often ends up in a drama triangle (Karpmann), where the roles of abuser, victim and helper play out in turn – incl. themes such as naming and blaming.
However, it is far from always true sex addiction and it is often far more important to gain insight, understanding, acceptance and recognition of one’s own and the couple’s patterns (phenomenology) as well as dialogue, boundaries, wishes, support, agreements, solutions and tools – elements such as I address in couples therapy. In principle, there is no limit to what can be abused or what we can become addicted to. This applies (addictive substances as well as non-addictive substances) from vitamins, sunbathing and sports to sweets, food, coffee, tobacco, work and games to medicine, alcohol and drugs. This is probably also why people are reluctant to develop new official diagnoses.
The boundaries between addiction, abuse, heavy consumption and consumption are also fluid. The most important thing is to come to an understanding of whether it is a problem, for whom it is a problem and how it is a problem. If it is just a problem for one of the parties, it is by definition a problem. And if it bothers you, that is reason enough to seek professional couples therapy.
However, one does not need to be diagnosed in order to reach clarification – self-diagnosis, recognition, responsibility and action are sufficient. If you want additional support, you can seek individual psychotherapy, couples therapy, family therapy, infidelity therapy and/or sexological talk therapy.
Free Sex Addiction Test©
As a couples therapist with a specialty in sexology and infidelity as well as a background as an abuse therapist, I have prepared a special SexAddictionTest© for self-diagnosis, which you can download free and anonymously. The test is self-scoring and self-evaluating, so you do not need to share it with others.
